OR booking tasks should be processed within: Elective bookings: 1 week of assignment Urgent bookings: within 1 business day for urgent OR cases Community emergency slate: immediately upon receipt

THE OR TIME IS A SHARED RESOURCE. IF A UROLOGIST CANNOT UTILIZE THEIR ALLOCATED TIME, IT IS GIVEN BACK THE UROLOGY POOL AND MADE AVAILABLE TO THE OTHER UROLOGISTS. It should never be given back to the hospital unless every urologist has explicitly turned the time down.

Discussion should occur AS SOON as it is anticipated that an operating slate may not be filled. This should avoid the situations where there is not enough time to fill the slates. OR time takes priority over Richmond and Delta Clinics (i.e. these clinics may be rescheduled to allow for utilization of OR time). Rescheduling clinics elsewhere (e.g. Genesis, PCRM, False Creek, other) or rescheduling cystoscopy time are to be discussed on a case by case basis with the urologist. See general scheduling guidelines here.

Special Circumstances

Richmond Hospital Outpatient Emergency Visits

Surgeon calls OR desk 604-244-5202 to add patient to outpatient ER slate

  1. Booking staff fax/carry papers (booking forms, patient questionnaire, labs) to the OR desk - DONE IMMEDIATELY (the patient will not be added to the list until the papers are received)

  2. Booking staff call bed control with the contact information. Bed control will contact the patient when time becomes available.

  3. Booking staff call patient to confirm (1) when they are to be NPO and (2) hospital contact number if they have any questions

  4. Patient is provided requisition for any necessary blood work/ECG and asked to goto the RH outpatient lab. PATIENT INFORMATION SHEET SHOULD BE PROVIDED

  5. Booking surgeon contacts colleague to pass along case if necessary

 

Genesis Fertility

Sperm Retrival Andologist Requests - generally needed for microdisection TESE only

Booking Instructions

In the absence of specific instructions, those detailed below should be considered standard of care. Where 'blanks' exist, the urologist has not specified instructions and it will be the urologists responsibility to communicate their wishes on a case-by-case basis.

The intention of these instructions is to streamline and standardize patient care, where appropriate. Pre-booking of post-operative follow-up should eliminate difficulty in scheduling follow-up appointments because of a lack of clinic slots and reduce overall staff work resulting from unnecessary patient enquiries

Definitions

  • The dates specified are times following the assigned day of surgery. Shorthand: /7 means days; /52 means weeks; /12 means months. e.g. 7-10/7 means 7-10 days post-op, 3/52 means 3 weeks post-op, 2/12 means 2 months post-op
